Started the floor replacement on my 60's 14' alum Starcraft. The floatation foam, looks like standard styrofoam cut in long blocks and laid ontop of the cross ribs. Some was damaged by mice, while other parts are acting as a water sponge that doesn't seem to ever dry out??? About 50% looks good enough to reuse.

Should I reuse the foam? I am not sure what causes the foam to be a sponge. Is it just long contact with water or age deteriation? I would prefer not to use the spray in type foam, because it would prevent water from draining to the center and back of the boat. Can styrofoam sheets be substituted?

The amount of foam, does not look like it is sufficient to keep the boat afloat with engine. Comparing to my 14' rowboat, which is much lighter, it has all three bench seats filled with foam.

John, That old (waterlogged)foam was not as resistant to water absorbing, as today's foam. I would replace it all if it is just blocks. Home Depot (and others) have sheets of 3 inch thick foam which you could glue up into the blocks you need. If you need custom pieces, you can get two-part pourable foam.

The thickest ones are only 3 1/4". The 3" should do fine, and I have some 3/4" poly panel that I can use more toward the outside. I guess it can't hurt to add extra, where I can. Thanks, I'll check that out at Home Depot.
