I took it to shop yesterday just to have it looked over. It runs like a charm but will not shift into forward. The guy said its probably the clutch dog. Is this the only thing that could make it not shift. It goes into reverse and netrual no prob. I had the lower unit off last week putting a new spaghetti gasket on. could i have put lower unit back on wrong to cause this problem

Shift rod connector? Does the screw go through the notch in the shift rod?

Also, since you had the skeg off, check to make sure you got the shift fork pivot screw in correctly.

It is not the clutch dog. A worn one will still go into gear, it just won't stay in gear.

it has to be the shift fork pivot screw. I still do know exactly how to get it lined up right. Do i need to have it in a certain gear for it to line up so the screw will go through the pivot hole..

On my 54 Johnson 10 HP, I had a little trouble getting the shifter right the first time. All I can say is fiddle with it a little and when it pops into the right place, you'll know it. Make sure the rod slips into the connection joint all the way. There was a little detent in the end of the rod that fit around the screw that holds it all together. Not sure if yours is the same, but I would suspect it's very similar. Main concept is to play with it until it shifts right without it running and you should be good to go. From the sounds of it, that's your problem right there, nothing more serious.

Try putting the engine on it's side and get an awl or ice pick and a good flashlight and pick at it until you line it up and then put the screw back in.

Another idea, did the shift fork seat properly in the collar on the clutch dog? If not seated, that could cause the problem, too...

Agreed. If you got the pin in, it should work. Unless the fork and cradle aren't in place on the inside. But it shifts to reverse and neutral, so that makes me wonder it we are even on the right track.
