61 40 hp johnson

i have a 1961 40 hp johnson that when it starts it smokes a lot and takes some time to reach speed and it can't sustain a low idle

Welcome to the iboats.com forum! The experts here, which I am not, can help you with any problem. They like you to include a model number in your post to insure accurate responses. Do you have a service manual to assist you with repairs?

They do smoke a bit when starting. Nature of the beast.
A couple of tests to do first:
Compression check (you can borrow a compression gauge at an auto parts store sometimes)
Spark test (spark tester is best; 7 or 8 bucks at a parts store)

If those check out, then you've narrowed it down to the fuel system.
