hey guys im new to this forum and im trying to figure out why my 61 johnson will run for a few seconds but then sputter out. I have replace the spark plugs but i do not know a whole lot about boat motors. I picked the boat up last year for $200 and my last project is the motor. i bought a carb rebuild kit for it but was told by a mechanic that it was laready rebuilt not that long ago. Any help is appriciated. thanks.
also does anyone know where you can find an online manual for this year?

If it runs only for a few seconds it almost surely is a fuel problem. Do you pump the primer bulb until it's fairly firm? If it still does dies quickly the problem could be your fuel pump. Or sticky float needle, or if your float is cork it could be gaslogged. Have you tried pumping the bulb while it's running? Does it run on choke? Also, there's no telling about the carb. Sometimes they look fine but one little clogged passageway will cause it to mess up and do exactly what you describe. Any other symptoms? Have you checked all your fuel lines for air leaks?

Very likely that you are looking at a fuel delivery problem, but none the less, I would check the spark and compression to ensure there are no issues there.

As far as a manual, check www.ebay.com or www.outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint. On ebay, look for a factory OEM service manual

The ignition system will fool ya. Might not be the carb at all. Have you checked the coils? They are famous for being bad (cracked). They have new ones here at iboats.

Your description would seem it is starving for fuel.Try the choke.put some fuel mix in a squeeze bottle and very carefully squirt it into the carb. If it responds then you have a fuel supply problem. You may be able to find a service manual at the library. Most likely an after market manual covering many brands above 30 hp.A compression check is important as it will be an indication of the condition of the motors power head.
