I just replaced the impeller and thermostat in a 1961 40 hp lark.I Have not ran it in almost a month. After impeller replacement she started up and water flowed fine, although it smoked quite a bit more than it did last time I ran it, could this be from some of the gas evaporating and making a higher oil to fuel ratio? Also a white greasy substance is visible in the exhaust outlet by the prop.Any Ideas? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I forgot to mention that it seems to smoke a little more with the hood off.

The smoking is normal, especially if you're using the correct 24:1 fuel/oil mix. The white goop/crud is just exhaust gunk. Neither will be noticeable on the water.

You mention smoking with the hood off. Are you saying smoke is getting inside the hood? That will happen if you leave the o-ring off the top of the water pump housing.

I left the old o-ring on. It looked fine. I'll check and see if smoke is getting in the hood. Thanks.
