Went to change oil in the lower unit of my 61 Merc 500. Took out lower plug and plug right above cavitation plate. The plugs were the same. Expected oil to come running out but it didn't, just a little. Tried to pump oil in but it would just take a very small amount and I couldn't get anymore in. This morning before I headed to work I took another quick look and noticed another plug just below the cavitation plate but it doesn't look the same as the bottom one. Thought I'd try that one after work but it just didn't look right. What do you guys think?

The upper plug which you removed may have been a Flush plug where an attachment was fitted to allow water flushing of the engine. Let us know what happens when you remove the other one as you must have the vent open to drain and fill the LU.

You should be able to see the plugs under Gear Housing in the parts list which I sent to you previously.

Had wrong plug alright. Vent plug was completely different and was a bolt instead of a plug. My son thought he was a daredevil and capsized boat. Thankfully not hurt but motor was completely submerged all night. He wasn't in any hurry to tell me.
