I have my old Elgin running pretty good now except now, when I back off the throttle, I get what feels like a back-fire or dieseling knock. At first I thought it was machanical, like gears or something, but it's not.

What would cause this, timing off? If so, how do I adjust it?

Are you talking about a cough or sneeze at idle speeds? That is caused by running too lean on the fuel/air mixture. If that's not what you are describing, then I have no idea.

I was showing it off to my brother in law and we figured out it was the nut holding the fly wheel was loose and it was tapping the bottom of the pull start.

All fixed and it is working very well. I was having a problem with the water pump and once I got it submerged the correct depth in water. it worked fine. Starts first pull and runs smooth as honey.
