Hello Gents, I have been absent for a bit but good to be back!! Aquired this evinrude 10 hp 62 model. Changed the lower unit fluid put it on my boat and motor ran flawless but noticed a lot of oil residue in the water including little oil ball looking stuff around the motor exhaust area. Pulled the boat out and looked like milkshake dripping from motor. Drained lower unit and had tons of water in it. Pulled lower unit and looks to me like the seal around shift shaft has problem. Can anyone give me some advice on this and how to fix. Thanks, Mark

Hey Mark. Welcome back. Yea, it sounds like you have a had upper gearcase seal. I found that vintage outboard sells awesome kits for those lower units. I bought some from them in the past and they're a lot like the OEM stuff was back when these motors were new.

What kind of treat is it to change out the shift shaft seal? Thanks again. Mettyfish

With the proper bushing tool...seems like F_R used to make them...10 min. or less...have a new bushing on hand and remove the old one with a punch from the back side ( this will probably make it unusable again)..10 min. or less...I took just the part of the housing containing the bushing to the local dealer..removed and reinstalled old bushing with new seal ( o-ring )..$10..and you guessed it..10 min. or less

Metty..get some 3M 847...and the seal kit Zeph mentioned....everything has a first time, right?...you'll advance your knowledge...I would suggest to you to have the LU pressure tested before you reinstall it..unless you happen to enjoy just taking them on and off

LOL. Yes, F_R does sell the shift rod seal removal tool and it works great. Like AlTn says, 10 minutes and it's done. Some of those bushings install from the bottom and some install from the top, so be careful and check it over really good. According to what I see on the parts list, the shift rod seal and bushing go in from the top side. Items 37 and 38 are the bushing and o-ring

Hi mettyfish. Sounds like you might want to get a lower unit seal kit to seal everything up nice and tight. You should be able to get a kit right ehre at iboats for about $20-$30 (if memory serves). I just recently installed a new seal kit for the first time in my '61 Johnson 10 hp. It was a little scary at first, but once I took it apart it really wasn't that bad. It was actually fun learing how the gears work. If memory serves, the kits come with a spaghetti seal, a drive shaft seal, a propshaft seal, a shift rod bearing seal, a waterpump gasket seal, two white plastic gaskets for the drain and vent screws, a small o-ring for the shift shaft pivot screw. I know that sounds like a lot, but it's really not as bad as it sounds. The old drive shaft seal and propshaft seals can be a little tricky to remove, howerver. I would highly recommend you get a seal puller from Harbor Freight for about $7 to make the job easier. There are tons of great posting here and on the net that can walk you through changing the seals. once they're changed the lower unit wil be good to go. Feel free to ask questions if you get stuck. Here's a great link to a thread right here in the forums that can walk you through some of the tough spots.

Re: 62 Evinrude 10 hp lower unit question

I believe that your motor is the 10hp with the smaller LU. I have had the exact same problem which seems to be common. Before you invest in a seal kit check the upper driveshaft bushing. You will have to open the LU anyway. You will notice a small chamfer on the driveshaft bushing which will indicate if the bushing is worn. If it is worn the LU is toast. Also check the driveshaft at that point, mine was badly worn and deeply grooved from being run with water as the lubricant. Finding a good used LU or driveshaft for it is equavilant to winning the lottery. I discovered this after rebuilding the powerhead, carb, and magneto. If you do indeed only need a seal kit I can make you a deal on one, new unopened in the box.

I'm in the same boat. I recently bought the motor and the gear oil was clear before I put it in the water. After a couple trips, I checked it last night and found the oil had turned black and watery. I had noticed a grey slime coming from the LU and when I pulled the vent plug, watery gunk poured out.

Tin Knocker, if mettyfish doesn't want the seal kit, I'm interested.

Experienced the same upper d/s bushing wear on a 1958 10 hp...F_R furthered my education in this matter...with just the d/s inserted into the upper housing, there was at least 3/32" of side play..near 0 is optimal...sooooo...that's a true test of how much to invest in this LU...I happened to find another upper housing for $20 which had a much tighter fit for the d/s to bushing clearance

Re: 62 Evinrude 10 hp lower unit question

Thanks for all the input on this. Before I read about the seal pullers I tried to hammer and screw driver the old driveshaft seal out of the waterpump plate and broke it. Dang it. uuurrrrgggg Does anyone know where I can get that part? Is it still made? Thanks for the offer tin knocker but I did pick up a seal kit. All of the gears and drive shaft look great so I just need the waterpump plate and I can get going. I will for sure pick up a seal puller though. Oh and my motor is a 61 model 100022. Oh and what is a chamfer? Thanks, Mettyfish

Re: 62 Evinrude 10 hp lower unit question

The chamfer would be a small bevel on the opening for the driveshaft. Any amount of wear would be noticable by a difference in the width of the bevel.

I may have a line on the part I need. What is the best way to get the new seals put back in with out damaging them. Is there a trick or procedure people use? Thanks, Mettyfish
