62 evinrude 65hp electric shift issues need answers

got this motor for free! After installing new gearcase and putting in water the motor starts in forward gear and wont shift out what could be causing this?

This motor defaults to forward gear when the motor is not running.--It has a hydraulic pump that provides oil pressure to shift.------If there is no power to the shift solenoids it will not shift.----It will always be in forward.--------So this might be as simple as a wire off the switch in the control box.---------When running it requires 12 volts to the green wire to get nuetral.----To get reverse it requires 12 volts on both the green and the blue.--------It must have oil in the unit.--It will not shift properly if there is a lot of water in the gear box.

where is the control box located? it shifted perfect before i replaced the gearcase. the gearcase is filled with the proper lube

The switch is in the control box .---Evinrude model has the 3 push buttons.------------Were the 2 wires coming from the lower unit hooked up correctly.---Did this replacement unit shift correctly before it was installed.-------Trust me a good one will shift when the driveshaft is turned with a vicegrip.---With 12 volts appled to the green and - to the gearcase it will go to nuetral after about one turn of the driveshaft.----It will go to reverse after 2 turns with 12 volts applied to both the green and blue.

okay the wires in the control box are good. I had to splice the old electric shift cable into the replacement unit because the owner had cut it off. maybe when pulling the the cable up through i pulled it apart so there would be nothing getting to the green and blue wires up top causing it to remain in forward?

You are correct.---If no power is applied then it stays in forward.---The clutch dog is spring loaded and in forward gear there is no power to the shift solenoids.-----These units are elegantly simple , very reliable too.----Many folks will argue and say they are junk.

There is no such thing as a 1962 65hp. I assume you mean 1972?? A 1972 would have thru-the-propeller exhaust.

He also mentioned new gearcase. I'm forced to wonder if he filled it with Type C/Premium Blend

They still shift if they have the wrong oil in them !!
