First post! A lot of great information on here!

I just bought this 52 SeaHorse for $375. It runs great on a stand and supposedly had a nearly complete rebuild done recently. My question is about the jb weld job near the motor mount in the below picture.

I saw it before I bought it and the guy seemed to have never noticed it. However, it was cracked by the time I got home and now I'm concerned. Any input?

hmmmm. that is quite a bit of jb weld. I suppose to do it right, you'd have to clean off the old jb and get it welded, but if you're lucky, you might be able to find a donor motor mount bracket and just swap it out.

JB Weld is good stuff, but not that good.

You will have to disassemble it to weld it or you will burn up the rubber mount. You may as well replace the steering bracket.

Ya, start poking around on Ebay, you can weld that but cast is pretty hard to get right and it may just crack agian so replacing is your best bet.

FR is right, I would use JB on alot of things but that isn't one of them.

Ya, he never noticed it, I believe that, I bet he was hoping you woudln't notice it either.

You guys are echoing what I was thinking. I should have gone with my instinct and passed up on the purchase. My intent was to get a lake ready motor that didn't require any immediate work.

Any input on what other models used the same bracket? I'd like to get this fixed asap.

Makes you wonder how the rest of his "fixes" were done. If you can't find a replacement or a competent welder you could send the bracket to me for welding.

Just sent you a pm. It's an inexpensive fix if you want it to be. ;)

UPDATE

Zephyr helped me source the part and I'm in the process of getting it replaced. Thanks for the responses. This is my new #1 forum so I'll be here for a while.

awesome. glad you got her fixed. i thik you did the right thing. probably cheaper, quicker and esaiser to have picked up a donor part rather than trying to fix the old one. keep us posted.

Got it fixed.

It wasn't a bad repair. Probably took about 5-6 hours and most of that was spent cleaing parts. I repalced the bolts that hold the handle to the shaft with some stainless grade 5 bolts and lock washers.

Notice the zerks! The were a couple on the handle throttle shaft that I couldn't do because there wasn't enough material to drill into. One of the grease fittings was already broken and I had to drill it out and use a grease needle to grease it.
