Ive done some searches and found out the really is no way to see if water is pumping ... hopefully someone say there is a way. so im stuck on the water flow and a way to check to see if impellor is woking a llittle or not at all. what are some tale tell sighns motor is over heating so i know icase it is so im not messing it up i appericate the help JOSH

Re: 62 Johnson 28hp problem

The water level must be above the water pump as the pump is not self priming. Have the water level about 3" above the area where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing.

The water screen just above the propeller and the small plate on the side of the lower unit just above the cavitation plate are both water intake areas.

When everything is as it should be (cooling wise), water should shoot out the exhaust relief hole in the back of the long exhaust housing with quite some force.... the hole you see about halfway down that housing, even at an idle. If there is no water shooting out that hole, drop the lower unit and install a new water pump assembly.

Some water will also exit the hole, just above the propeller, in the bottom portion of the lower unit along with exhaust.

Impeller available here on Iboats. To drop lower, remove the smaller bolts going through from the bottom and the one large bolt at the rear of the motor which goes though from the top. Disconnect the lower shift rod by completely removing the lower coupler bolt, and the L/U will drop down.
