It seams all of the old motors I run blows excess oil out of the top seal ( below the points ) and eventually fouls out the points with oil, I'm guessing it's from the ethanol in the gas. Does anyone have a fix for this, maybe an additive that will swell the seal, or 're condition them. I don't want to go inside this thing if I don't have to

The seal can be pulled without opening up the block.

The easiest way to do it is with the special tool of course. Short of that, drive a couple sheet metal screws into it, and pry it out. Then drop in new one, use a piece of pvc pipe or large socket same size as seal, and tap in.]

While a lot of times the excess oil can come from the leaky seal, it also comes from using too much grease under the mag plate. A thin smear is all that is needed there.

Thanks for the info, what sort of grease is the best to use under the mag plate?
