Ok I got my motor running and I've been noticing that it started running sicker and sicker until now it will crank and run for about 5 sec and just shut off.... IN THE WATER!! I crank it out the water and it will run until I shut it off.. which isnt long bc i dont wanna ruin it.
So I pulled the head and My gasket is Super shabby and I had some water beaded up in the cylinder wall So im assuming water is leaking passed the head gasket and fouling out my plugs to kill the engine...? would a new head gasket solve my problems and put me back in the game?????

Did you do a compression test first?
If no then id replace the gasket with a new, make sure everything is good and clean and flat. then reassemble it and test the compression. If it good then,,,Go on with your trouble shooting.
It may be a carb or timing problem. You will have to do the steps to find out.

By the way if it doesnt run good in the water, then it doesnt run good. On the hose really doesnt count.
also if you have ran it out of the water and not on the hose, then you sould replace the impeller as it is probably bad by now too.
No water means no run....this is rule number 1.

No wonder it wouldn't run. Water in the cylinders sure put the fire out. Hopefully, the new gasket will cure the water leak. If not you have big troubles.

Re: 63 evinrude 5.5..

I havent RAN it out of water... I just tilted the motor out of the bucket crunk it... ran it for about 5 sec.. lowered it slowly down into the bucket.. it hit the water ran for about 2 more sec and died.. so its definitely water puttin out the fire. Its not ALOT of water just a few beads inside the cylinder wall when I opened it up but enough to drown the spark apparently.. But say the gasket doesnt solve the problem?? where else would water get in at?? and cause these BIG problems? im just trying to understand the motor and where water runs through the tubes and where it could get in at. just more knowledge

A few beads IS a lot in by book. In addition to the head gasket, the water can get in through a faulty exhaust cover or gaskets on the side of the powerhead. The Big problem would be rare--a hole corroded through the block or something like that.

An affliction that most of those old motors have is the lower crankshaft seal leaking. But in that case they continue to run fine until the little bit of water destroys all the bearings. Then somebody always says it was ran without enough oil. That is why I keep preaching that the seal must be attended to whenever the powerhead is removed, such as for a water pump job.

And this seal your talking about is the rubber seal under the powerhead that the powerhead seats ontop of? bc that looks pretty rough on mine to.. I got this motor for free and have 50 bucks in it so far so im still doing pretty well price wise.

Sounds like the roll pin in the driveshaft is gone.Look at the top portion of the drive shaft, has a hole in it.If it doesn't have a roll pin there, may be prob. That roll pin compresses the spring seal to the power head.A lot of people take these out because it makes the drive shaft easier to install.

Water can come from one other source - the fuel. With the alcohol content in today's gasoline it can attract a fair bit of water via condensation. Check your fuel for water in the bottom of the can...
