I thought I'd share some pics of my rewire project on my 40hp 63 Johnson. A little background as to what started this project. The wiring on the motor itself was all original. After a little over 50 years of being out in the elements and such the wiring finely failed on me the other day. I knew it was getting bad, but it was one of the projects I didn't want to have to tackle right away. What pushed this project forward was the fact that some how, and I'm still not sure how this happened. But the main control box that houses the starter solenoid somehow became filled with water. What's odd is we hadn't had any rain for a long period of time, and my boat was bone dry at the time I discovered it being full of water. The only thing I can think of is it's been quite humid around here as of late and there is a chance condensation might have caused this mess. Anyway I always wanted to have a way I could easily disconnect the wiring to the motor so that I could pull the motor easier without going through a big mess to do so. So what I did I I got a hold of a trailer wiring plug and a single male female connector as well and moved the solenoid to inside the engine housing compartment. I had to drill a couple of holes to put bolts through to hold the solenoid. But for a afternoons worth of work everything turned out good and the motor runs fine. The first picture I've attached gives you and idea on how badly rusted it got inside the control box.
