I have a 1963 evinrude speedifour. I just recently got the boat running. I have a few questions about getting the rpm gauge hooked up. And also my motor does not look like it takes typical ear muffs. It seems it uses a set up that sprays water up from the prop area. I'm wondering if this sounds correct and maybe someone can tell me how to set it up. I don't want to smoke my motor the first time I really try to run it. Thanks chad

Can't help with the tac, but you will probably have to run it in a barrel. Make sure the water level is well above the water pump to get it to prime properly. They did make a flush attachment at one time, but they are not made anymore.

Try Tiny Tach.com for a tach.

The Tempo part is 916TFC, no longer produced. You can sometimes find them on ebay. Looks like you just missed one. I don't see why it couldn't be made with some metal working tools, though the barrel method normally works well. 3 pics of the flusher are here:

OK apparently I wasn't being clear . I HAVE the flush adapter! I just wanted to make sure it was the right tool before I cooked my motor. Thanks @yorab. Do u know how to use it? Do u just remove prop then install and run water?

Re: 63' speedifour questions.

If you have the one posted on e-bay, that is the correct one. It clamps to the cavitation plate and covers the water intake screen. It does NOT squirt up the exhaust, but goes to the water pump inlet.

Install it, turn on the hose, and start the motor. The water goes nowhere if the motor isn't running. No need to remove the prop unless it is hitting the flusher.

Note: This is a flushing tool and you cannot test a water pump by running it on a flusher. Or any other motor, for that matter.

OK f_r . Thanks for the info. Can u tell me how to check the water pump? I have only had the motor running for a few seconds. And I do not want to burn it up. But want to make sure its ready for the water. Also can u tell me other things to check before the maiden voyage? Thanks

Re: 63' speedifour questions.

Read the top secret file at the top of the Evinrude/Johnson forum."Its been 2 years start" = waking a sleeping outboard.
If you don't know the age of the impeller(pump) it should be changed.Only way to know if the present pump is pumping
is in a barrel with water right up to the mounting clamp. If the pump is old it could fail any time and fry the motor before you know it.
Also if its really bad might chunks might get into the cooling system.
Change the gear lube, note its condition.Be sure the fuel line and connectors are good.
I was shocked the other day at Wally World a primer bulb was almost $20 and a fuel hose complete was over $40.

@steelspike I have already changed a bunch of rotten hoses. Thank you for the help . Do I leave the prop on while doing the barrel test?

Re: 63' speedifour questions.

Take the prop off. You won't throw water all over the place if you drop it in gear.

I've never had a problem tank testing my 50 with the prop on, just don't put it in gear.
Regardless don't rev too high as you may get a runaway.
