Hi,

Last year I got to use my girlfriend's father's early-70's Johnson 9.5 (or 9.9?) and I fell in love with it. I feel that with my small boat, the light weight of this motor would make a huge difference, and the low profile would not get in the way of my fishing, as my current mercury does

Anyway, I found a 1964 "10 hp" evinrude (I'm assuming it's actually the 9.5) on craigslist. He said it has a prop seal that leaks oil, but doesn't let water in-- I'd be suspicious and want to replace that.

So, a few questions.

1) Is this the same motor as the late sixties/early 70's evinrude/johnson 9.5 and 9.9 motors? I'm having a surprisingly tough time finding pictures of this motor. Mainly what I'm looking for is the low profile (hangs lower in the water) and the lighter weight (at least for a 10hp).

2) Is there anything you can tell me about this particular model that I should know?

3) Is it tough to replace the prop seal to stop it from leaking oil? A quick googling makes it sound pretty easy... makes me wonder why he didn't do it before he decide to sell it.

The motor I'm trying to compare it to is the one here, which is a 1969:

The guy is putting it up for just under $300. I was expecting to pay more like 400 or 500, but, I also was looking for something in the early 70's, and this also has the prop seal concern... so I think the price isn't spectactular, but reasonable, but if you have any thoughts on that, please provide them. :)

Thanks in advance,
Scott

The 9.9hp came out in 1974. Both 9.5 and 9.9 had the low profile that you like, but I hear most folks say the 9.5 is hard to work on. The '64 10hp motor you're looking at on CL has the traditional high profile. The prop leak should be a concern. You're looking at doing a gearcase reseal job. Not exactly easy, but not too difficult. It can troublesome to seal the gear case halves. At least the seller mentioned the leak. Some are not so honest.
Just my 2 cents. Others will chime.

Yes that is a 9.5 in the pic, known as the "pumpkin head" motors, if it's not a 10 hp, call him and get a model number to be sure. The prop seal(s) is a relatively simple fix compared to a newer motor, the lower skeg unscrews from the lower unit.

They are a VERY light weight motor compared to the 9.9. I've got a 65 in my stable and it starts second pull and shifts and runs perfectly. Some had gasket issues and wouldn't run with the hood on due to inhaling it's own exhaust fumes. If you have a chance to demo it on the water test it with the hood on. To change the seal 6 screws come out of the bottom of the lower unit and the skeg is moved revealing the gears, seals and spaghetti seal. If he's running it in a barrel check to make sure it's pumping water out the back hole, check head for hot overheat condition.

Another read for info albeit small:

The motor in your picture is a 9.5 from 1966, like the one shown here: http://old-omc.de/e_1966/seite_12_13.jpg

They did not make a 10 HP motor in 1964.

If I do buy it, I hope the guy selling it wears the same shirt as the guy in the boat in your picture. :)

Thanks for the input guys... any more is still welcome if you have it. Does $275 sound reasonable? Obviously it'd vary greatly based on how it runs and all of that. But it sounds reasonable to me, providing that the prop seal isn't a big issue and it runs well.

10hp 1949 - 1963 (56 -63 Evinrude)
9.5hp 1964 - 1973
9.9hp 1974 on

That's pretty much the years of the different motors. The 10hp is the easiest of the three to work on and the 9.9 isn't much harder. The lower unit on the 9.5 is actually easier to work on than the 9.9 but everything else is a bit tougher. One of the funnest things to work on, is changing the lower boot inside the cowlings, which is usually what causes the problems of running the cover on.

Guy sent me pictures.

It's not a 64, it's the 10 hp pictured above.

Thanks for the guidance anyway. Your words aren't wasted-- It will still apply when i eventually find a 9.5 sportwin.
