OK so i go buy new points condensers coils and wires for the ol girl I remove flywheel and coil housing and like a dumb @#$ i tear it all apart. Have in past replaces points and condenser on small motors. put all new parts in gap points at .020 gap plugs at .030 try to start it and she wont start. pulled plugs installed spark tester and no spark at all. now im looking at the coils and i dont know if i have the right coil hooked the right set of points and not sure if i have the right wire on the right cylinder even though i know that is not the most pressing issue i just need spark and i could figure the location of the wires easy enough. The question: Can someone post a pic of the coil and points location for me. And which wire goes to top cylinder. She was running ok before except for a occational miss like a dead miss hard jerking feeling that was better than now. I would gladly settle for the way it was if i can get it running again Thanks in advance.

you cant go wrong with the coil to points connection, other than maybe the ground wire, but are your coils set flush to the mounting bosses? to far back, no fire, to far out, rub the flywheel.

I call myself mounting them flush but i think the bosses have a slight step in the that maybe the problem too far away to pick up the magnet will check in a bit thanks for the info

Re: 64 18hp Evinrude Coil location Question

thanks a lot looks like the points counter clockwise to the coil r the ones that belong to0 the that
so the magnet in the flywheel passes the coil creating the storedenergy and then the points open
collapsing the field thus a spark at the plug looks simple enough trying to get coils set right now thanks again
