Hello all,
I thoroughly enjoy reading this board and I have been searching it for the past month and finally; I decided to join!

I hope I can help others and share ideas as I have seen some great information and support on this site.

*My problem:
I have a '64 5.5HP Johnson that I have completely rebuilt and it has been running great. However; I have hit the prop on the bottom twice and each time the crank gets very hard to pull and stiff afterward.

The shear pin in the prop has sheared both times and I replaced it. Also, I have made sure the unit will go in to Fwd, N, and Reverse and the prop moves with those shift changes accordingly.

Crankshaft Key looks good!

Could it be in the Pinion Gear?

Any ideas or opinions would be appreciated....

Thanks and I look forward to contributing to the board...
Shawn

On that small engine, a broken shear pin should be about all that happens. If the engine feel's hard to turn over now, remove the gearcase, and see how it feels. I can't think of what could cause internal damage to the gearcase other than having been run without, or low on lube. Another possibility is that the case is sprung, but let's take the gearcase off first, and see what you find.

I'm pretty sure that motor has the 2-piece driveshaft with the spring shock absorber below the waterpump. If it does, then I think you've got a broken shock absorber. When they break, they expand a bit and bind up, giving the symptoms you describe.

This could be it... I have taken the lower unit apart numerous times and never seen this spring in that area. Maybe the previous owner went with out it...?

Believe it, it is there. You can't see it because it is inside the two sleeves. Well you can see it if you clean the hole out real good and peer down in there. It doesn't come apart, at least unless it is broken.

Yup. Won't work without it. You access it from the top of the lower unit. Its under the bearing housing under the water pump.

Ok, I have searched all over the internet and visited my local boat shop and we cannot find this part.

I tried shock absorber, spring etc when looking for this part.

Does anyone know of a website that sells this part?

They don't make a new replacement, but that's just as well because it would be so expensive you wouldn't buy it anyway.

You can get it from a marine wrecker, eBay or from a free ad posted over at aomci.org. Any 1954-64 5.5 or 7.5 hp Johnson/Evinrude will work. You could also try over at Laings or TwinCity.
