I was changing the shift shaft bushing on my '64 650 earlier. Got a brand new bushing, brand new OEM bushing tool all so I wouldn't screw up. Well, I had to pull off the tilt interlock peices, and wasn't thinking and turned them while I was pulling them up, and it turned all the way over and went PING. Now it's stuck in forward. I know that the shift shaft is at the very least out of it's socket, but could it have broken anything?

I really doubt if it broke anything. If it couldn't take that, then it couldn't push a boat.

The Mercs all are loaded to forward gear, then it takes mechanical effort to more it to neutral or reverse.

So you'll have to remove the propshaft bearing carrier, reverse and propshaft. Then find the cam that got pushed out of the way. You have to have the shift shaft into the cam BEFORE you re-install the propshaft and all that you removed.

20 minute job with the right tools.

Good luck
