Different PN between the two cases, but allot of the same PN's for the guts. May bolt right up. See if any of the other guys have done it...

If the drive shafts #'s are the same, it should bolt on. You can check part numbers here: Johnson Evinrude Outboard Motor Parts by Year 1955 to 2011

Someone who's done it will likely chime in soon.

You may want to call Tim's outboard 218-682-2331 w/your model number, and see if they have a used/good gearcase for sale. If not, you could ask 'em if the ebay model will fit yours.. they're very helpful folks! Here's some other salvage yards to try: http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/salvage-yards-wilde1-438822.html

Good luck!

when I look up the model number, I can only find 9422S. Can't find the 9422R. Any know what the difference between S and R?

Re: 64 9.5 Sportwin Gear Case

The difference was a model run change. Not sure off hand exactly what changes.

As stated, I believe it would work. IF the drive shaft and shift rod have the same part numbers.

That being said, seems expensive for what you are getting. I would look elsewhere myself. Call the salvage yards, or post a wanted ad at aomci.org.

I would reccomend getting a parts motor. May be able to get one for around the 50 buck range, and then you will have other parts should you need them. Just my suggestion.

Should bolt right up. If you ever need a lower seal kit make sure you get one for the yr of lower unit not the powerhead. I think it`s mid `67 that changed seal sizes.

Thanks for the help guys. I found this gem on CL....1970 9.5Hp Johnson OB Parts

the guy is going to let me drain the lube and pressure test with some soapy water.....I checked the part number of the drive shaft and shift rod, and they are both the same, at least according to marineengine.com so, you think its worth it?

Well that is a better deal than the ebay find. Tell him youll give him 75 bucks and come over with cash in hand. :)

I cannot think of why it would not work, but have to be honest, my experience with the 9.5s is limited.

Cool, thanks again. So were johnson and evinrude basically the exact same motors, just with different names and model numbers?

I offered him 80 over e-mail, he countered with 90, and i said depending on the pressure test, depends on what we agree on.

Thanks for your help. hope it works out!

Cosmetically different, but mechanics are the same.
