Hi, I am a newbie to the boating world, recently I got a used 14' aluminum with a '64 Evinrude 18 hp. The motor ran and idle fine, start with a few pull when cold. However, when the rev up all the way it maxed out at 10 mph with one small person on board. After reading a lot about use motor and what to look for I discovered that the lower unit is leaking in water. (I just got done rebuild the carb & change the spark plugs).
After a lot of works trying to remove the 6 screws so I can get access to all the seals I finally got the screws out. My question is does the screws when tighten will prevent water from coming through the thread since there are no washer (assuming a tight seal every where else)? I am planing to replace those screws with same size screws from a local hardware store since the head are no longer in good shape to be reuse.

I also read that 3M 847 sealant is recommended but the local marine shop didn't have any and sold me OEM Johson gasket sealant would that works, I also picked up a tube of Permatex gasket sealant not sure which of these 2 works better?

Thanks
