I have read some of the other posts on this issue, but I'm still not sure. I removed the lower unit housing (the leg) on my buddys 1964 6hp Mercury to replace the impeller, of which all I found were pieces. I removed the upper water pump cover to reveal what looks like about 1" brass nut. It looks as if there is a small key slot on the inside edge of it as well. Is this actually a nut, is it part of the impeller, and how do you remove it? I haven't ordered the impeller yet to see what it looks like as I wanted to see what else I was going break in this process and would also have to order. Are there any other tricks to this process? Thanks for any help!

If it is like my 7.5 the brass "nut" is part of the impeller. The rubber just seperated from the nut. Yes, there is a key and a key way. That is what makes the impeller turn to create water flow. The key is really small and when you remove what remains of the impeller it will fall to the bottom of the pump area. Be careful not to lose it down the intake area. I did that and got lucky to get it back. The brass should just slip off. It may take a little tugging but it should come up.

This is all predicated on the idea that your 6 HP and my 7.5 have the same arrangement for the water impeller. Good luck.

Actually the older 6hp will probably have a pin sticking out and the impeller will have a slot to match. Same idea, though. The pin should stay in place. Be careful when trying to pry out the remnants of the impeller so as not to damage the stainless steel water pump 'cup' as it's a pain to get out of there to replace.

Be sure to order an impeller by ser # of your motor, if you have a pin-drive the impellers found in later 7.5's, 9.8's, etc won't fit.
