My first boat, 64 Starchief that I am restoring with my father for fun. Fairly new to I-boats and i'm excited to get this boat in the water. Parts are a difficult thing to find thats for sure and all the boat shops around here aren't much help. Starcraft actually told me to not bother and to scrap it. Well I like taking the odd and broken junk in the weeds and making it something again. I posted in the resto forum but was informed this is where most everyone hangs out although in only three hours my resto thread had over a 100 views. Seems to be a busy site so that is good. I am looking for parts if my resto thread wasn't seen. Windshield upper and lower, transom cap and end caps, front bow rail, fuel tank, origanal horn if possible, throttle revers controls, and i have a Johnson 60 but no ignition system for it. At least not one that is any good anymore so how do I find out which ignition systems I can put into this boat that will work. I apologize if i'm off on my terminology, I have never owned a boat. I have an addiction of likeing everything and wanting a bit of everything and the easiest and most enjoyable way is getting things and restoring them. Also, for some reason it says all my pictures are to large to load? How do I change that, they are just normal pictures off a camera? Thanks everyone

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

Let's bring these over from Gib's thread:
I was just looking through alot of your pics and the boat looks to be coming along well. I myself purchased a 64 for 350 but it was in need of repair so I am doing the exact same thing as you going through the whole boat. I am looking for parts, windshields, transom caps front hatch cover if you found any places that may have that stuff in your rebuild. I have pulled everything out of of the boat and i'm stripping all the aluminum right now. One question i had was are you leaving the back crossmember out and doing somehting differant there? I would like to take that back crossmember out and create a little more space but I fear if i dont do it properly i will lose my strenght. Any suggestions?
I have two more questions, any suggestion as to stripping the paint? I'm using aircraft paint remover as well as sanding but like everyone i'm hoping to find an easier way to avoid all the sanding. My chief also doesn't have the front rail, I don't know as to where I can find or have that made and if I have it made i'd like to get it close to the origanal as possible so if there is any help there that would be great.

Open a free photobucket acct & copy the IMG
Code:
from each pix & paste the code in your thread. It'll look something like this:
[I]IMG]http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/Snow.jpg[/IMG][/I]

And the pix shows up embedded in your post instead of as a attachement:
[IMG]http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg618/jbcurt00/Snow.jpg[/IMG]

Photobucket (PB) has made some changes that many of us choose to decline. If it asks if you WANT to use the new & improved PB, [B]DON'T. [/B] If it asks if you want to use CLASSIC or the older version of PB, [B]DO.[/B] But in it's settings PB has an option to auto-size pix, choose that too.

As for the rest, the SC crew will be along to bash ya for not having pix yet. Tech difficulties make no matter when the mob gathers. And will help w/ the questions....

Welcome to the Tin-sanity :)

I will try to set up the photobucket acct. I'm still trying to figure out this site so it may take me awhile. I only get on my computer maybe once a week or even two but I will do what I can to avoid the bashing. lol. Also I dont know why but I have gotten emails of things people have posted in the thread but the posts arn't in here. I don't know why that would happen.... I'm sure its something i'm doing wrong. I'll figure it out someday. I'm gonna go check out photobucket now.

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

You are probably expecting the posts to be here in your thread, but if you have posted in other threads, the iboats server often auto-subscribes you to those threads.

OR more likely the posts are in the other 1964 SC resto thread you started the same day as this 1

In my area I have contacted multiple windshield companies and even ones that advertise custom work but none have been able to do it. I found another company online that I sent an email to I believe sunday but haven't heard any word back yet so I assume they can't and just won't answer. That seems to be the norm with companies. I'll figure something out, i'm not going to give up that easy.

Having multiple threads makes it tough to follow where you've been & where you're headed w/ your project. Either place is good, some resto projects are here in the SC forum, others SC owners use the resto section for their thread. Choose 1 or the other, and PM a mod asking them to combine the threads. You'll need to tell them which area you want it combined into though.

I have looked in the threads that i am in but there is one missing still. I plan to stay mostly in this one that i started for just my boat and anyone who wants to check it out i suppose. I am learning the my iboats section and how to navigate it a little better.

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

ok so, i'm getting a bit irritated. Photobucket didn't ask me anything about how I wanted to import pictures or anything about using new or classic. I got the photos loaded into photobucket but iboats still says they are to big. i'm thinking everyone will just have to imagine my boat. lol

You don't look like Kate Winslet or Leonardo........ nice try though. Hopefully your metal boat won't meet the same fate :faint2:

Oh my. It looks more like a rainforest terrarium than a boat on the inside. The outside looks decent though. Are you planning on repainting it?

When the time comes the windshield will not be a problem. ;)

If you need to remove it or it's trim, DO IT VERY CAREFULLY & save all the parts, pieces & hardware.

Yea, the yellow is just a latex house paint that peels right off. Already started stripping the paint but i'm waiting for photobucket to upload other pics. For some reason when I reorganized my pics i lost a lot of them but I do have some others I will put up

the winshield and trim have been cut and patched, I will show you in my next set of pictures if they upload this decade. The window is not the same shape and the trim is also no good so to match size and shape i don't know what to do.

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

FYI: Once you post a pix from photobucket, those pix are links to your PB acct. If you move pix around or rearrange them in your acct (into groups or folders), the links will be broken & the pix won't appear where ever you posted them.

You can remake the windshield, but it's much easier if you have a trimmed & installed windshield, even if it's broken/cracked. Post the pix & we'll go from there. But that is just another thing to be working on in the background as you work thru the boat. Trailer too.....

HAHAHAHAHA, JB i just saw your titanic referance, Funny thing is to take that pic was very hard, i'm afraid of hieghts and to hang out like that i felt like i was going to fall, fairly sad considering its only maybe a 7 foot drop, haha

Re: 64 Starchief Resto

well, we havent taken the windshield trim out because we are afraid we wont be able to get a new one. the trim is a two piece so you install the outer trim, slide the windshield in from the inside and then rivet a trim piece through the windshield that holds it in place. even though you say its no big deal i'm still worried. its the only part of the boat i'm just not sure of
