65 33hp broken fitting

While working on the motor I noticed that the fitting directly under the carburator is snapped off. The hose leads to a fitting at the top of the engine on the right side. Try as I might I can't get the fitting out, besides that it seems like something is blocking it because I can't get a wire in it for more than a 1/4". On my parts motor I can push the wire in approx. 1'. Any suggestions? Thanx, Phil.

That sounds like your vacuum hose. I think you will need to replace the whole inlet manifold.

This fitting is quite important, and the hole inside it is really small, any damage to it will result in the vacuum cutout not operating properly. Basicly, never poke a piece of wire inside the fitting.

If it ever needs cleaning, use a #76 drill.

Lark, I think he's talking about the oil recirculation fitting. It sends oil from the bottom of the lower crankcase up to the top bearing. If so, that's going to be a pain in the neck to fix since access is so bad.
It runs without any restriction into an oil collection groove in the bottom main crank bearing. If it's been open for a while it may have sucked in a pile of crud, or perhaps someone once stuffed something in there to "fix" the engine.
Unfortunately, that bottom nipple is pressed in place, so I think the only way to replace it would be to drill it out and press in a new one. Which pretty much means removing the block for access. You could try loosening and tilting the pan up, but around here that usually means breaking a rubber isolator or two.

Thats exactly what it is, Paul. I pulled the intake off of my parts motor to see what I'm getting into and I think I'm going to try to replace the nipple without pulling the intake. The intake on the parts motor had been removed at one time and whoever did it replaced bolts with studs at the very bottom of the intake and before I got that thing off I created a new cuss word. My only real concern is getting all the shavings out after I drill it. Oh well it's a long winter and we won't be seeing open water around here until April.

If you end up splitting the crankcase, you'll need new spagetti & o-rings to reseal it. Plus the manifold gaskets. Not a big deal but an expense. The drill bit ought to direct the shavings out, but if it were mine I'd give it a healthy flushing with WD 40 or similar.

The nipple lists as PN 303423 (~$7, available) if it turns out to be impossible to pop one out of your parts motor. The big twins normally have studs there in the front because it's pretty well impossible to fit in a bolt long enough to thread in properly. Getting the nuts on those studs can be quite a challange too.

While you've got it exposed, I recommend you disassemble & clean the drain valve assy just to the right of that nipple. It means making/buying a couple new gaskets but it's good to make sure that's clean & functioning right. Though it's not impossible to do it in place either.
