'65 9.5hp Evinrude; low speed needlevalve question

As mentioned in previous threads, my attempts at getting this long dormant engine running continue. I have installed a new impeller, plugs, fuel line and re filled the lower unit. When running it last Friday, the engine started easily, but would not idle, and had a steady low speed miss. When I disassembled the carb, I found white build up suggesting water intrusion in the reed valve area, and in the throttle venturi, which was restricting operation of the throttle valve. I removed the low speed needle valve, and needle valve nut and found, no packing, no O rings or springs, as shown in an Evinrude diagram. The "needle valve nut" ,screws into the carb body, and the low speed needle valve ( or slow speed) into the nut. The tip of the needle valve sticks into a hole in the carb body.

I'm missing parts it seems, would these "needle valve packing, washers and spring", come in a rebuild kit.

here's a picture as they came out of the carb, I see nothing in the carb body itself where they screw in.

Thanks for the help

Your model was before the spring/0-ring setup. You need valve packing 307583. You can put 2 in there and cinch up the packing nut until there's proper tension on the needle (initial setting, 1.5 turns out). Not having 'em installed will definitely cause idle problems.
Good luck!

Whew, that's great news. Are they little O rings? They go in before the needle vale nut, and then the low speed needle goes in? that's how it looks on the diagram anyway.

If they are O rings, is there any chance I could get them at my local auto parts store?

They are not o-orings. They are actually made of gasket material. But would be a lot easier to buy than to try to cut your own.

I've used #47 orings from tru value and a bit of grease in the past, works fine.. but I buy the real ones by the dozen now.. they're like little fiber washers that'll expand a bit when squished. Put the packing nut on the needle, then the oring/washers, and install.

Thanks for the extra info there guys! I have a Tru Value almost accross the street, so I will try those and see what happens. If my problem with the reed valve housing continues, I'll probably just scrap this project. If its not one thing, its another. I'm learning a great deal, so its not a total loss. I will update as I make progress,
Thank you,
Steve
