I have a '65 evinrude 28h outboard that pops out of forward gear at low rpms.
reverse is fine. was wondering if i can make an adjustment at the shroud or is this motor in bigger trouble. It appears as though the pin on the gear shift slips out of the collor on the plate due to vibration. I thought of tweaking the plate a little to hold it in place but...

Disconnect the gearshift cable from the shift lever at the motor. Place the gearshift handle at the helm in neutral. Make sure the motor shift lever is in neutral. Now, the cable connection should line up with the motor shift lever. If it doesn't, adjust the trunnion nut until it does.

You could also disconnect the shift cable and see if it shifts ok by hand.
If it does then the gearcase should be ok.
