i recently aquired a 65 hp johnson.i believe it to be a 1972.model # 65esl-72s ,serial# j3667101.
if someone could verify that.on the motor cover it has the words "loop charged",what does that mean?its also "hydro electric drive"that i know about(it doesnt work right now).the switch in the control box is broke.it also has "50th aniversary special edition" on the cover.is anything special about this motor.

overall the motor is in good shape.it does need the basic tune up,water pump and lower unit seals(water in fluid)and the coils have cracks in them but does run.where is a good site to get all these parts?i figure the shift switch in the control box will be the hard part to get.

i know napa auto carries alot of outboard parts, but can they look up the parts or do i need the numbers for them.

Re: 65 hp info

Hi Rsharer
I don,t mean to be discouraging. From the sounds of things this motor needs a lot of fairly expencive work. It is a 1972 model with hydro/elec shift. The shift switch in the control box is all but impossible to find. The 50th aniversery thing means nothing as far as the motor is concerned. The loop charged is the way the fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber. A drawing would better explain this. It is a whole lot better and easier to order parts from Napa and most other places if you already have the part#s. Espiecaly Napa as most of the time they have absolutely no clue. I can help with part#s. You sound like you may have some expirence. I strongly sugggest getting a manual if you don't already. I also suggest figuring out the total of the work needed and the total cost of the parts before you get too far along. You could sock a grand into this sucker before you know it. All that said, have a blast with your new project, good luck, and if you need help just ask.
