Have tried re-adjusting the switch with the engine in neutral Lake? If you look on the shift lever, there is place on it that sticks out that the switch rides against. Put the control in neutral and re-adjust the switch so that it closes when against this spot on the shift lever.

Re: 65 hp johnson

If it is the 50th anniversary model it is most likely a 1972. If your model number is either 65ES72 or 65ESL72. It is a 1972. I have the 65hp 1972 Evinrude version. I had a similiar problem when I first bought mine.

The place on the shift lever has a spot like OBJ said. If yours is a 1972, you will not be able to adjust the position of the switch. The switch position is fixed. You can adjust the piece on the shift lever to make it come into contact with the switch.

There is a piece of sheet metal that is attached to the shift lever with a screw(this is the piece that comes in contact with the switch). Before adjusting make sure the throttle is in nuetral.
Loosen the screw and adjust/move the piece of sheet metal until it comes in contact with and depresses the nuetral switch. It will take some adjustment to get it in the right spot.

Watch out for moving it to far. I moved mine to far at first and was able to start the engine with the control lever at over half throttle.

Good Luck
-TR
