The lower units were the weak point on those mtrs as parts are now getting hard to find and very expensive.

Re: 65 Hp Johnsons 1972 vintage

Nice to see your post. I was looking for a tachometer-related thread and came across your post. I also have recently acquired one of these little beauties. Mine came on a 1973 Glastron 173, in beautiful condition. No hour meter, of course, but it looks great and the engine runs well (after installing new plugs and mixing up some new fuel) My problem is a non-functioning tach and a dead charging system. The rectifier was bad and while it did fix the charging problem, it did not fix the tach. Well, if I had to choose I would rather have it charging and keep looking for the tach problem.
My take on the usefulness of the older engines is as it has been since I had a VW shop in the hippie days. I'd agree with His Majesty and Supreme Mariner boobie and say run 'em till they are unrepairable and then get something else. I would also guess that parts availability will limit how much money you can put into it.
I wish you the best. I'll be moving along to locate my tach thread. If anyone reading this has an answer to the tachometer dilemma please say on. I'll be around.
Thanks,
Mickdougal
