Drained the oil in my 69 650 thunderbolt, water is in the oil. I did put new oil rings on drain and vent plugs before I put the boat in. Anyway I noticed to-day the lower unit is not done up tight at the front, could see a very small gap about 5 inchs long. When you put the bottom end on should there be a gasket on there to keep the water out, or does it not matter if water gets in there. Thanks for any Info!

Do you mean where the lower unit and the mid section come together i.e. meet? Mine did not have a gasket or seal either and I really don't think there ever was one. That is not where the water is gettin in at.

Yep! thats where I mean where they come together. Must be coming through the prop seals maybe. Going to do an air test on it today and see. Thank's Whoohoo, for the return reply.

I just had my LU re-sealed off an inline 6 and it costed about $150.00 with parts and labor. I was told that the condition of the inside of the gearcase will largely determine whether or not the unit can be sealed 100% (with something that old..mine is a '74. The mechanic said the water usually gets in around the shift shaft seal. Good luck.
