I have a 1973 Johnson 65HP 65ESL73R motor on a 1975 Savage Tasman I bought last may..

I'm about to do carby clean and re-kit on mine because when i had it on the water.. it would start but the moment I put it into gear it would stall. also it doesnt idle well, and has a tendancy to rev really high when i start it, to the point I have to manualy play with the throttle and choke for a bit. So once the new floats arrive im gonna rip one of the carbs off and have a go..

Can I please ask - what advise would any experienced boaters make in what to do after cleaning the carbs and re-kitting.

So Far I have changed, Starter Solenoide - new, Thermostate -new , Impeller -new, coils (with 2nd hand) and Ignition Pack (2nd Hand) and Regulator- new

I am getting over 13 volts when its running so I know my charge circuits are ok.

Also can anyone tell me how to check revs with a multimeter on this??

Regards

i would also advise you to check the reed valves , & clean them, unscrew the 6 screws on each reed valve that hold the plate to the casting , u should find some dirt between the plate , as ive just cleaned my 1974 70hp john sons toady . cheers .

Re: 65ESL73R Carb adjustment

anyone reading this - an update - better late than never -

I found that the motor had swallowed water in a previous life. 3rd carby showed signs of water and I couldnt get the screws out to clean the jets etc even though i used mig wire I couldnt get to all of the jets and tubes. even soaked them in carby cleaner.. and it appeared to run much better I ended up taking to the mechanic who in the end replaced with 2nd hand carby's - unit idled a lot lower rpm than I could get which was a good thing. Ran well enough to get out on the water and spin the old propellor. however it was very slugish and needed to be gently brought up to speed to get going.
