I have a 1969 65hp 4 cyl 2 stroke Merc Thunderbolt.
Never had the boat out myself yet, but a friend I lent it to says when it's cold starts great, and takes off just fine. Guess when he went to start after it was warm it would keep stalling when put in gear. He said every time after about the fourth try the boat would take off and run great with 4 of them in it the boat being just 16 ft. He told me while in gear the Idel seemed little low, could this maybe be the problem. Other than that the boat runs good without a miss. Thanks for any Info guy's

Yep, sounds like the idle timing could use a nudge upward. Maybe a carb fine tune adjustment as well.

Hookem Dano,

I had the exact same problem with my merc650. try running a search on the topic merc 650 as others have had similar problems.

here is the link to my post.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=020377

There are some good suggestions there. In the end I replaced the fuel primer bulb/hoses and played with idle mixture and it seems to be fine.

cheers - T

Do a spark check when warm ,on all 4cylinders.
The switchboxes are sturdy, but don't take kindly to coil problems, and ignition switch kill wire with any voltage present (rare, but it blows them quickly).
Run it in a barrel on a dark night, and look for arcing. They sure named these ignition packages correctly,as they are hotter than a bolt of lightning. But run with a plug wire not fully inserted into a coil, and you have about 5 minutes before the switchbox melts down.
