If we bought this 1973 65hp evinrude would it fit on our old Glasspar Tacoma it is a 1965 I believe. The guy says it has a 20 inch shaft on that motor and my husband measured the back of the boat from where the top of the engine sits on the transom to just at the bottom of the boat, is that right? My husband says that measurement on the boat was 17 inches if thats right would that 65hp fit? Thanks.

Re: 65hp on old glasspar tacoma

I own a 1964 Glaspar Tacoma, Mine has a 20" transom which measures about 21" top to bottom. A transom which measures 17" usually requires a 15" or short shaft motor, but many 20" shaft motors have multiple mounting holes which allow you to adjust the height.
My boat came to me with only a 40hp Merc on it, I hung a 55hp Johnson and it's more than enough, but I have seen the same or the very similar Avalon model with as much as 100 hp on it.

Do you have any pics of your Tacoma? They are pretty rare here in NJ, it seems that most of the Glaspar boats in this size range are Avalon models. Mine was brought here from WA, by way of MS, IL, and DE somewhere along the way. (I found old registrations in the boat from previous owners). Mine has had a complete floor replacement done prior to me getting it, I would be curious to see how it looked before the changes were made. I know they lowered the floor and changed the seating arrangement. I am looking at setting it up for lake and river fishing with a smaller motor since it's so light.
It's one of the lightest 16' boats I've seen yet, it's even lighter than my 16' Starcraft Aluminum hull of the same closed bow style.
Does yours have two drain plugs? Is there inside access to the lower bilge?
Right or left hand drive?

haven't heard from ya'll in a while. if the motor is to long, just build a jackplate, this is a 20 in motor on a 15 in transom.

So do you think this 1973 Johnson 65 hp would be O.K. for this boat? Also how hard to hook up steering and throttle cables etc? Its good to hear from you all again, we have been gone for awhile (from I-boats) but its getting warm and sure would like to get this boat running. The old Johnson 35hp sea horse we had wanted to get running on this boat just hasn't happened yet. Even though we bought the pressure tank and all. So now were thinking if we could buy this 65hp that already runs maybe we could actually get it going without to much more money.

Now I see a 1984 evinrude 60hp outboard for sale for $750.00 with the controls. Would that be better for our Tacoma?

for the 5hp difference, i would go with the 84 if it checks out, the controls are worth atleast $100.

I'd have to agree with TD, the mid 80's motors were about as good as it gets as far as older motors go.
If your boat is like mine, it's super light, so 60hp should be fine. Mine lived most of it's life with a 40hp on it when the last owner still had it, and he said he pulled what he thought was the original 25hp from it.

Does yours have a curved or straight transom?
