Hi guys, Looking at the manual I found there is a oiler wick some where close to the points and coils but the picture points to the ring around the shaft where the end of the points touch. this is the same ring that once you put the key it gets locked in place  . if this is what they are talking about, can some body please tell me what is the function? is it suppose to be round or slightly oval? Why does it say that I need to put a few drops of oil in it?

Thanks, every body has been extremely helpful and there is no way I could had been this far without you guys. I hope I make it all the way and get this baby running.
:D

Hi Nikari,
That ring is the Point Cam. It'll have the word "TOP" on one end - make sure that faces up. The oiling wick is pressed down into the magneto plate below one of the coils - you'll see a slot where it'll stick out, facing the cam. If you don't have the wick, LIGHTLY grease the face of the cam where the points ride, otherwise you'll be forever resetting the points as the fiber rider wears down. Wicks usually come with a new set of points.
- Scott

Thanks chinewalker, is that point cam supposed to be round or like a cam slightly oval? Also right where you mention below the coil (on one only) there is a bracket but no wick. what is the wick made out of? can I make one? are they readily abailable? are they standard? Boy, I hope you can keep up with my questions.
Thanks in advance

Hi Nikari,
Yes, the cam is supposed to be out-of-round. That's how it opens and closes the points. The flywheel key aligns it so that the firing impulses occur when they're supposed to.
The wick itself is a pliable fiber, kind of a heavy felt. Last I knew they only came with the point sets, but you might be able to improvise. They are about 3/8" wide by 3/4" long by 1/8" thick. The are set into the slot on the armature plate so that the face, not the tip, rides on the point cam. I usually add about 3-4 drops of 3-in-1 oil to keep it lubed. Doesn't take much...
- Scott

Nikari1, speak to your OMC dealer or your local Napa stores, they may be able to order these separate or have some on hand. The material they are made of now stands the test of time (As opposed to the old ones that melted away to goo), is stiff enough to keep in contact with the cam and will not breakdown under gas and oil. Point sets are under $5. Very little money for piece of mind, and trouble-free operation.

Re: 66 18 HP fastwin Oiler wick

I tried to buy a new point wick at my local OMC dealer for my 1961 18hp Fastwin. The part number is "510189". I was told that it is no longer available.
The clip that holds the wick is part number "510188". Still available for list price of $2.77.
Anyone have any idea where I could find a wick for this application?
By the way, the part numbers for the 1966 18hp Fastwin are the same as above...

Re: 66 18 HP fastwin Oiler wick

I hope I have done OK, it looks good so far. I tried to get the wick with no luck so I cut a piece of leather from one of my wife's purses (Hope she does not notice)and made a wick out of it so far it appears to work although I do not know how long it will last. I do not know how hot it gets in there or if there is a chance for fire I put a few drops of oil on it and made sure it was touchimg the point cam since that is why it is there for in first place. If any body have any idea about what I just did wether is a bad idea or not please let me know.
Thanks
