'66 40hp Thermostat

I was checking a new thermostat that I bought for my '66 Big twin by dropping it in a cup of boiling water and here is what I found. Initial temp reading with a barbeque meat thermometer in the cup of water measured at 197 degrees and was about 30 seconds after removing the cup of water from the microwave once it started boiling. The thermostat opened immediately. It stayed open until the thermometer measured 145 degrees. It appears that the thermostat is working properly but once I install it on my motor, no water comes out of the water discharge port when I run it in a barrel or on the flushing device in my driveway. If I remove the t-stat, water sprays out just fine and gets pretty hot after several minutes of idling. I'm hesitant to run the motor for an extended period with no water coming out of the discharge port since the powerhead seems very hot to the touch. Does this seem normal for these motors or should I just run it without the thermostat installed? Thanks for the help.

How long did it run? May take awhile for the thermostat to get warm enough to open up I would run it longer with the thermostat in if I read ur post right. Seems like your impeller is workin just fine.

Yes, you did read it right, the impeller is working fine and it spits water great when the thermostat is removed. It is when I put the the thermostat back in that it will no longer spit any water out the relief port. I'll try idling a little longer but it seems the heads get very hot to the touch so I'm just very concerned about overheating and damage. I have since read that sometimes these engines never get the t-stat to open during idle so there is probably no problem.

It sounds the like the t-stat is working properly, so you probably have a clogged passage in the power head somewhere. Some folks have luck using weed eater string to clear the passages, but you may need to remove the head gasket to visually inspect the passages, or try using compressed air to blow out the passages.
