So I picked up a 66 40hp big twinn model 40652b. It was flooding itself out when I was trying to start it, so I ordered a carb rebuild kit and a new float. I disassembled, cleaned, and resembled with new gaskets, needle, float, and set the float according to the instructions. Now I can't recall which came first, because I've been back and forth so many times now, but I adjust the float, and won't get any fuel into the carb, so I adjust it the other way, and I can get it to fire, but gas comes out the carb and dies. I've tried to adjust it ever so slightly, and just can't seem to get a happy medium. What am I missing? Help would be appreciated, pulling on this thing is getting old........

Could be your float fuel cut off pin isn't attached to the float correctly.procedure is-turn the carb upside down, the float should be parallel with the carb body.
This should allow the bowl to fill and cut off when full.
If the cut off pin isn't attached correctly to the float,it won't operate.

Thanks for the link, it was at least worth the read.

As for the pin connecting, I don't believe it does connect. the float arm is underneath the pin, so gravity lets it drop to let fuel come down into the bowl, as the float rises, it pushes the pin up, and it closes the passage. It wasn't connected before, and I don't see any way to connect it.

Yeah, if the clip is missing, that would explain the problem. It is necessary with new inlet needles that have a soft tip.

Well Damn, my rebuild kit came with a new needle and seat, but no clip, and there wasn't one on there before. The new float didn't come with one either. None of my paperwork shows one either.

So basically I need to order this https://www.marine engine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-7093 take the space out between marine and engine, apparently iboats has them blocked as a link

then set the float correctly it should function.....

I tried the old needle, same issue, but I don't know how long ago someone else tried changing it, so it could be a newer style needle still. Although it doesn't have the little groove on the back side.

It's an old-style needle if there is no groove for the clip. The black tipped needles (newer needles) can stick, making the clip important. If you don't know what's in there, changing out the needle and seat would be the way to go. May need another kit -- doesn't hurt to have a spare.

Thanks, I ordered a new needle and seat kit, that showed having a clip, hopefully that will take care of things. The needle in there did have a black tip, but no groove. It's a cheap part, might as well just put it on there, then I know. Thanks for the help.
