66 Big Twin starter bracket bolts?

So I picked up a 66 40hp big twin model 40652b, and I'm working on getting it running. Upon getting it to idle briefly, I noticed gases coming from the holes in the starter bracket, and to me it sure looks like there should be some bolts or screws in there. I'm having trouble figuring out which screws they are. I believe the fronts are either 0307878 or 0311367. Based on http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...vinrude&section=Manifold+And+Leaf+Plate+Group. But I'm not sure, and I can't seem to find the starter bracket anywhere in parts diagrams to see if it has assigned screws to it.

The big thing is just the getting the thread count, diameter, and length, and I can just go grab some locally. Any help be appreciated.

Those bolt holes do go through to the crankcase, and will cause poor running. If I remember correctly, they are standard 1/4" course thread stainless bolts. Originals probably had a 3/8" hex head.

The 2 ones on the lower front are screws with a slot head, part number 0311366. The ones missing from the side are studs with nylon lock nuts. The large one missing from the front on top is a 1/2 inch hex head bolt with a slot in it. I dont know the lengths or what thread they. But they seem to be the same for many years. The starter brackets and hardware are the same on my 1963 28hp and my 40hps from the mid 70s.

Thanks, that actually helps a lot. I guess for length, I'll just make sure they are long enough to grab enough threads to hold good, that way I don't run them in to far and have them get in the way.

Put some paste type gasket sealer on the threads of the ones going through the lower bracket. Like Permatex in a tube.
