I have saw a few electronic ignition conversion kits to replace points, but havent saw one for use with a motor with a generator, does anyone know of one and if so,where can i find it.i would like to replace my points because im constantly having to replace them, ive been told theyre supposed to last a while, but they never do,,they dont really get pitted or burned, just a spot on each where they touch, they will still look good, but just wont fire the plug till i put a new set on,,,esp the top cyl,,,its the one i always have trouble with,,,,new cond also,,,,,will run great on new points about 4 trips out/6hrs a trip,,,then top cyl stops firing till i replace that point set,,,,whats up with that?

Something is wrong! My points are over 10 years old. Make sure they are perfectly clean (alcohol or acetone or brake cleaner). The condenser is also suspect. Also make sure the ground wire is in place between the armature plate and the engine block.

What color do the points look like when have to replace them?? Are they perfectly clean before you install them. Sometimes new points have a film on them that needs cleaning before installing. I've also seen new condensers that can be bad.

I always use some sandpaper on the bottom of the points and condenser and the mag plate where they mount to make sure I am getting a good ground.

Something is definitely wrong. I never change points on any of my engines. The very odd time I file em and clean em but that's it. It looks like you said you replace the condensors? If not, that's where I would start.

Maybe a weak coil on that cylinder?

Is your ign system a magneto/points/condenser/coil type? The points replacement devices they use for lawnmowers should work for you I would think.

I am also concerned about the length of time the points last. They should last years and years. You haven't conected battery voltage to the points, have you?

Re: 66 evin 40hp,points conversion with generator

havent connected 12v to points or coils, that would spell disaster for my coils ,i know that for sure,,,,,,,,coils and conden, all fine, points even look good, and my other two sets look good also,,,,,,maybe i do need to make sure im getting a good ground to armature plate under points,,,,,bottom of point sets to armature plate connection, maybe thats all, just losing connection ,,daviet says he sands his points and cond on bottom,i will make sure i have clean connections there,,thanks chris and whaler,i do need to check that armature plate to engine ground,,,,,,,,,maybe i wont change, you guys are restoring my faith in points,i salute you,,,,,if something does go wrong with the points, you usually have one cyl to make it back on,i guess id rather keep it original too,,thanks everybody
