I just purchased a 66 Larson that I will be restoring. It came with an Evinrude s-100 (100693m) that “runs well, per seller.”

Once I have it off the boat and on a stand I’d like to give it a test run. I’m new to boats and old outboards like this, so I would greatly appreciate any tips or guidance so that I don’t destroy it.

I ordered a shop manual as well as a copy of the original owners manual. A couple of questions I have that I suspect the manuals won’t answer... 1. The gas tank is the original steal tank, should I worry about corrosion or anything else with that old tank causing problems? 2. The boat didn’t come with a battery and I’m not inclined to buy one until I have it restored. Can I use a car battery in the mean time?

Thanks for any guidance!

My suggestion would be to get it running while on the boat and give it a good lake test. Then you'll know what your up against.JMO

The boat needs a new deck and transom before I’d feel comfortable putting her in the water. I’m in Wisconsin so there’s zero chance of that happening until spring. I could just set the motor aside until then but figured it would make sense to see where I’m at with it during the off-season.

How do you propose to get water to it if you run it on a stand? Flushing attachments for that motor are about rare as chicken fangs. Other option is a tank, but you'll need a pretty big one.

How do you propose to hook up the electrical on a stand? Remove it from the boat? If you plan to hot wire it, remember it needs a one-Ohm resistor in the ignition coil supply. Also, disconnect the alternator plugs so you don't blow something.

Look your gas tank over real good, inside and out. Any suspect rust, trash it.

Yes, you can run it on a big enough car battery, but not recommended for permanent use.

At least the 66 is still a battery ignition with points. A new water pump impeller is pretty much mandatory. BRP Premium Blend gear oil for the lower unit will insure the correct oil.
If you need to clean the carb, gaskets for that unit are not the easiest to find, and expensive. The inlet valve for the fuel bowl(s) is about $75, and there are 4 of them.

Remove the exhaust snout to adapt a water hose for cooling.---The steel tank if clean inside is far better than some of the plastic junk available today.-----Just replace the O-rings on the valves.------Your location ?

For cooling I was going to use a barrel. I have a big plastic shop trash bin that I think I can cut that should work. For electrical, I'll be pulling everything out of the boat so I figured I would just hook that back up.

I'm going to work on pulling the tank out tomorrow so I will let you guys know how that goes and how it looks.

Racerone, I'm in Wisconsin.

The 66 model 100 brings back many memories.---friends had one and on some weekends it rarely cooled down between outings.----fishing / waterskiing / more fishing.-----A great motor and simple to work on.----A very good / strong electric shift lower unit too.

Just leave the motor on the boat if you want to do some preliminary testing. Use the trailer jack to raise or lower for the barrel, if using one (water should be about half way up the leg) -- idle or high idle only. Standard procedure is to replace the impeller before any running, but maybe you can recontact the seller specifically about that (i.e., whether it was pumping water). You should see water from the port on the back of the leg almost immediately. Flow increases, but shouldn't be dry.

I think the Larson sandwiches the plywood transom envelope-style. There are extensive transom repair instructions here on iBoats, as you probably know.

That's multiple votes for giving it a go while still on the boat. I'm going to take that advice and give it a shot.

I bought it through an auction and literally the only detail I have was in the description, it said "motor runs good, per seller." There is a 2003 registration sticker on the boat so for all I know that really means "ran good, 15 years ago." I will play it safe and replace the impeller first. The service manual I ordered should be here sometime this week.

"It ran the last time I used it". Famous words among boaters.

As in Famous Last words?:laugh::laugh::laugh:

It might have ran fine 15 years ago, the last time it was used...
