I'm having trouble with removing the flywheel.

actually I've never really been able to do it. I bought a harmonic balance puller. swapped the hardware they gave me for grade 8 steel but still can't seem to pull the flywheel off.

everytime I do it the bolts get crooked. Is there a way to make sure everything is aligned properly before I do this.?

when the three bolts are threaded evenly, I take an impact wrench to the main bolt and the force should pop the flywheel off right?

thanks.

It should. Assuming you took the big nut off of the crank. :) You might need to torque the puller real tight, then tap (not slam) the center bolt of the puller, then torque it again, tap again, etc. The flywheel is on a tapered shaft, and sometimes those babys are really on there. The puller bolts should not be crooked. The flat side of the puller should be facing up. Sometimes you need heavy thick washers under the 1/4-20 bolts to make things work out smoothly

When I removed mine last month it was a tough job.

Spray PB Blast or WD40 in the top around the crank.
Place the flywheel nut back on and just level with the crank end.(loose)
Set up the puller, flat side up.
Snug the grade 8 bolts about 3/4" into the flywheel
Note: to shallow and they will strip the holes. To deep and you can damage parts underneath.
Snug the Puller as tight as possible without twisting the bolts.
Using a piece of 2"x4" and hammer Tap the starter ring, rotate and tap several areas.
Tighten the Puller more and repeat.

After several attempts and frustration breaks the flywheel will POP up. That is why the Nut is there.....so it doesn't hit you on the way across the shop.

Patients and good luck

NEVER HIT A FLYWHEEL!!!!!!
PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.

Won't come off even with an impact wrench?? Something is wrong with this picture. It should pop off in a heartbeat with that kind of force. Perhaps somebody Locktited it on??

Added warnings:
Several of us do things in ways others warn against. Doing anything with excessive force will result in damage.

Tapping is a light shocking impact. Never Strike an expensive part, like the flywheel, with a hammer.

When striking a puller center bolt many recommend someone hold the flywheel upwards to reduce impact on the lower crank seal and bearings.

Our advice is only that, to aid in DIY repairs. OEM has specialty tools designed to simplify the task.
