67 5hp evinrude outboard. Having trouble with the engine getting hot. Before problem I had sheared a pin and when i replaced the pin i found that the seal around the prop was bad. I pulled off the prop assembly cleaned out water and replace with gear oil and all new seals. Now engine gets really hot, and when i start it in full choke it starts, but after running it for about a minet i take the choke off and the engine revs high and then sputters out. I have the mix nob turned to rich and am running a 50:1 mix. I took it apart again and check to see if the impeller for the water pump is turning and it is.

Thanks,

evinrude trouble

Welcome to iboats ET.

Hot problem.....How old is the impeller and did the "vanes" pop straight out when the housing was removed? Old impellers lose their "memory" after to long a use and stay shaped in the form of the impeller housing. This is when they lose their ability to pump. Also, your engine has a thermostat. Look for triangular cover on top of the head held on with three bolts. The t-stat is under there. May be stuck shut.

Sounds like a carb cleaning and overhaul is due for ya'. Carb kits are available from any John/Rude dealer and the job is not difficult or hard. Just remember to blow out all passages with carb cleaner and follow up with compressed air.

Post any questions you might have.....thanks.

I pulled off the triangular plate on top of the head and there was nothing inside. I checked it just afer i ran the motor and it was bone dry,i replaced the gaskets. Is somthing suposed to be in there?

As fo the impeller they are probably as old as the motor so that probably needs replacement. the only problem is that the two screws on top of the impeller housing are frozen. i have hit them with penatrating oil a couple of days in a row and havent been able to get them loose. Do you suggest drilling them out and tapping it?

If you gently heat the housing directly under the screw, with a propane torch, it may help.
