67 6 HP Johnson- running in 5 gal can, no pee hole flow

I am test running for the first time a 67 Johnson with a new impeller put in, I have started it up on a rough idle in a 5 gal can. I saw no water flowing out of the back pee hole, in the rear -about mid level- of the exhaust housing. I did check most of the tubing when I replaced the impeller and it seems clear. I could rev it up in gear or out of gear for a minute or so. but since I saw no water coming out I did not bother with keeping it going. The water in the can was up to the level of the cavitation plate. Is that high enough, or did it need to go higher in the bucket? (e.g.. say over the upper by-pass cover?) I am replacing the thermostat just as part of updating the maintenance and I saw little if any water in the thermostat housing. Quite dry.

A great lesson I learned long ago was "start with the simple things first". I had the same problem you did with "no flow"...uncurl a paperclip and insert one end in about an inch. Wiggle it around a bit, and that will unclog any debris or material impeding the flow. It worked for me...
And as long as the water is above the plate you should be fine.

You need to have the water pump submerged before starting the motor. That means the bulge where the pump is located. That is a very good water pump, but a lousy air pump. It was designed to run on a boat in the lake, not in a 5 gallon bucket.

The bucket is fine, just make sure the water level is above the water pump. The cav. plate is not deep enough.

Don't put it in gear, in the bucket. I know this.:redface:

You may have already fried the impeller. Also that engine does not have a pee hole as in later engines. There may be a mist or small flow at low rpm that flow will increase with rpm. Don't expect much running in a bucket no matter how big.

Yes, it makes sense now. However after running the new impeller dry for 4 30 second intervals do you think I need to replace it outright or just see how it pumps?

I doubt you have destroyed the impeller after 4 very short periods with no water circulation. Try running the motor in a 30 gallon trash can and make sure that the water level is high enough to submerge the water pump. Let the motor sit in that water for a few minutes before running it just to be sure that the impeller housing fills with water.
