67 Evinrude 33 HP - sluggish

I have a 67 Ev 33HP that seems to be running sluggish. I've had the carb rebuilt and the fuel pump fixed and still she doesn't seem to get on plane.

Bit of history:
Boat sat for 3 years. Replaced plugs, added new gas, dumped her in and took off on plane - no issues. Next day, she wouldn't get on plan. A 9.9HP tin tipper passed us no problem when we were full out.

Had the carb rebuilt last year and a new fuel pump added. Still she was slow. Right now I am out of ideas. The only thing I could figure is to replace the 2 electrical coils. Both plugs are clean and sparking.

Do you think this will fix the problem?

Also is she worth repairing? I've never really had this engine running and someone told me that a 67 33HP uses more gas than a 50 HP of the same year.

You need to start with some basic checks, compression, spark, should jump 1/4 inch and a bright blue spark, fuel delivery.

Hey guys,

Just as an FYI....

Top Spark compressed at 100
Bottom spark compressed at 90.
Fuel delivery is perfect and blue flame is coming out.

Even in neutral the speed is indentical. I don't think the gear oil was ever changed though. Could someone give me the basics on this? What kind of oil do I pick up?

Compression looks OK. You say spark is OK. The only thing left is fuel. Try squriting some fuel mixture into the carb and see if it picks up. If it helps you still have a fuel problem.
There are two screws on the lower unit, do NOT touch the phillips screw, the upper is a vent and the lower is the fill. Remove the vent and fill screws and let lower unit drain. While it is draining replace the plastic gaskets on the screws. After it is drained fill from the bottom screw till it comes out the top screw. Install top screw first and then the bottom.

check to see if the timerbase,is advancing under the flywheel,if you timing dont advance you wont get full throttle.report your success back

I agree with checking the timing. I had the same problem with the sluggishness and we found a linkage out of adjustment. Fixed it and motor runs great now...
