I have a 1967 Evinrude Sportwin that just arrived today from an Ebay seller.
It runs great, looks great, and was describe to have a new water pump and rebuilt carb. It shifts fine and was nearly full of new lower unit lube when it arrived.

I ran it in a clean test barrel and got loads of lower unit oil in the water. I suppose if the water pump is new, or at least the impellar, that it probably wasn't sealed properly. I don't see and lube coming out anywhere except the drain holes in the lower midsection housing.

I would like some help learning how to remove this lower unit and experienced advice on how to stop the leaking in the suspected water pump seal. Thank you.

Is the oil black? Probably unburnt 2 stroke oil?

No. It's not black it's light brown. Looks like new lower unit oil. And in contaminated my test barrel immediatley. Less than 2 min running.

Then it wouldn't be your water pump. Could be:

Spaghetti seal in the gearcase
gasket under the bearing plate
leaking fill/vent screws
Shift rod o-ring
gearcase head o-ring

You will need to pressure test the lower or just replace all the seals/gaskets.

PS- i'm sure the seller knew what he was selling, gotta love ebay.

I had the same problem previously on a 1955 7.5hp Evinrude. It was the water pump that time. Bad gasket. I took the lower unit off of the 9.5 (simple enough). It was full inside of the water/oil scum. It was inside the pump as well. I think they had a seal in the wrong spot,as well the base plate has no gasket. It looks like they tried to use household silicone to seal it. I'm gonna redo all that mess first, then check again. Would anyone happen to have a lower unit diagram? I would like to recheck the seal placements.

I have a 55 7.5 and mine leaked oil cause the shock absorber blew the bearing plate to smitherines. There is no gasket on the water pump that would prevent oil leakage , the gasket is under the bearing plate or the bearing plate has an oil retainer. Go to shop.evinrude.com and lookup a 68, same diff , under gearcase, you'll see what I mean.

Yup. It's the bearing plate I was meaning. It has no gasket under it.

I spoke to the person I bought it from a minute ago and he seems to be a wanna be mechanic. He did the work himself but explained he didn't know it needed a gasket under the bearing plate. I'll make one, put it together and try again. Hopefully that's it. Also I appreciate the Evinrude link. Very helpfull.

Ya that's what I figured, at lease he fessed up, alot of people just play stupid. I guess his one mistake before fleabaying it was not running it.

Another good link with the actual parts manuals is

I think you can still buy the gasket but it shouldn't be hard to make one.

I made one and added a thin layer of red gasket material. It's currently setting. I noticed your first post listing "bearing plate". You called it. That same gasket was the one I replaced on my 7.5 as well.

Yup, I have a spare gasket and whole lower unit for the 7.5 sitting in the garage. When I bought my 7.5 you could shift it into gear and rotate the prop and it would turn the flywheel, forward and reverse. Meanwhile you put it in the barrel and nothing happened, the giveaway there was an issue is that I couldn't feel the shift detent while shifting, the shiftrod had bent and fell off the detent. I pulled the lower unit and discovered that the bearing plate was cracked and leaking oil. The shock absorber had broke and the force from the spring sent the top half of the absorber through the plate and you can't jb weld them, it messes with the water flow....I found a used plate and mig welded the shock, it won't happen again.

All sealed, all flushed. No new oil in the water. Success is sweet.

Pretty easy fix, dodged a bullet.
