Am checking out recently bought 67 Johnson 6 hp.

1. Pulled lower unit to check condition of water pump per service manual instructions. Lower unit came off exhaust housing fine with drive shaft still attached. Impeller checked out fine.

Now for reassembling unit. Looks easy per manual, but how do I get splined end of drive shaft into crankshaft splines (way way up inside exhaust housing) while at same time aligining water tube and shift rod into proper places? Do I need three hands, two heads?

What grommets or gaskets should I replace while doing this?

2. When checking the timing, the service manual refers to a timing fixture. Is this necessary, or just handy? Can I get this fixture at a reasonable price from a Johnson parts store?

3. When disassembling carburetor I noticed rubber cam follower had a groove worn into it. Can I replace this with a nylon bushing of similar size?

Appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Bednick

how about the roll pin at the upper end of the drive shaft that holds the lower crank shaft seal in place.

Re: 67 johnson 6 hp lower unit installation and other items

My problem is that I now have the gearcase and driveshaft as a unit and am trying to reinstall it onto the exhaust housing.

There is no mention in the manual about pin or seal. Manual does mention this for 5 hp engine.

Re: 67 johnson 6 hp lower unit installation and other items

Was there a roll pin near the top of the driveshaft or is there a small hole there? The roll pin holds the lower crankshaft seal assembly in place once the lower unit is installed. The roll pin goes through the hole in the driveshaft and sticks out out about 3/32" on each side of the drive shaft. The roll pin must be set crossways in reference to the gear case to fit through the slots in the upper portion of the midsection. I'm surprised you didn't notice this when the lower unit was dropped cause if the roll pin isn't right, the lower unit won't pull off or the pin will bend or break.

Thx OBJ, don't you ever sleep?

Roll pin IS in place, the lower unit pulled off, and the pin is not bent or broken.

Not sure what you mean by "slots in the upper portion of the midsection?"

So, I have the gear case complete with water pump and the drive shaft (with a pin at its top end just below splines) sticking up out of this assembly, and I want to reinstall it. Seems to me I need to get the splined end of drive shaft inserted into crankshaft with drive shaft pin oriented properly, while at same time getting water tube into water pump grommet and shift rod into shift rod connector.

HOW ON EARTH DO I DO THIS?

I am not stupid, have considerable mechanical experience, and have finally learned to pause, think, and ask for help rather than barge on and break something.

I DO have both the Seloc manual and the Ken Cook manuals. Wish they had more and better illustrations. In the Ken Cook manual under removal it says:

e. (6 HP) Align pin in driveshaft with slot in exhaust housing.
f. (6 HP and 9 1/2 HP only) drop gear case sufficiently to expose shift rod connector. Remove connector screw.
g. Remove upper and lower gearcase assembly from exhaust housing.

I puzzled over e, but couldn't understand it. Alignment must have happened by accident as removal was successful.

Thank you guys for your help so far and hope you can stay with me until I get past this.

Bednick

Take a strong flashlight and look up in the midsection where the drive shaft will go. You should see two slots that let the roll pin pass through. This will help you orient the pin.

Putting the lower unit back on ain't all that hard benick. Slide the driveshaft up into the lower unit, get the water tube lined up, turn the flywheel a little to line the splines up. Now you can drop it a little to get the shift rod connector in position. Once that's done, slide the lower unit up and bolt together. Once you do it, you'll see it's not all that bad.

OMIGOD! A FLASHLIGHT.

WTF is wrong with my head? Did I say I'm not stupid? Is dumb different than stupid?

All seriousness aside, cannot think why I did not think of that!

Ever go from one room to another and forget why u went there? That's not a "senior moment," it's now called "roomnesia!"

Can't wait to try the flashlight. Probably needs batteries.

BTW OBJ (I feel real with it using all these abbreviations) what about the timing fixture and the rubber cam follower I also asked about? Any comments?

Just looked at your profile OBJ and now have a small idea of how u can be so helpful. Thanks for all your advice and especially for your patience. I did customer service on fone for a while so I know how annoying people like me can be!

Re: 67 johnson 6 hp lower unit installation and other items

OBJ, as I see it, the roll pin presses against a washer which presses against a spring which presses against a seal. To get drive shaft inserted correctly, one has to line up roll pin with slot, line up water tube and shift rod, then rotate flywheel while pushing against spring pressure to get splines aligned, then tighten tighten screw in shift rod connector.

I have used the flashlight and it helps. My problem is: getting the splines on drive shaft to align with splines in crankshaft, then getting shift lever into shift lever connector and tightening screw in connector.

I'm sure that after doing a few of these it gets easier, but do you have any handy hints for me?

Get it up together as far as you can, and then while holding it there, turn the flywheel slowly with one hand. It's easier to do this if you pull the spark plugs. When the splines line up, it'll slide up that last bit.

Re: 67 johnson 6 hp lower unit installation and other items

Not bad, but those carburetor nuts! Not used to working in such close quarters. And I thot my MG Midget was packed tight under hood!

Developed a few good techniques: When upset and I start dropping things or doing stoooopid things, I quit, walk away and come back some time later. When I have just finished doing a GOOD thing, I take a break congratulate myself, relax, then start again. A variation on Chapelle's "Moaning chair."

Hey, anyone familiar with Phil Bolger's boat designs? Fun to build, but that's another post thread.
