I have a 67 Johnson golden meteor 100 horsepower and I'm having a problem with gear oil coming out the water intake after I run the motor and take it out of the water. The oil doesn't start to come out until I lower the motor back down out of the water and then I get a drip/stream of oil flowing out. I currently have the lower unit and gear extension off and I'm not sure where I should look for a bad gasket of where to look for anything wrong. Any advice or help would be great. Thanks!

Are you sure it's lower unit oil and not unburnt oil from the fuel ? Unburnt oil from the fuel system leaking out of the exhaust is pretty common.

The oil that is in the gear box when I took the screw out was milky white and very thick. The oil coming out of the water intake looks exactly the same so I'm pretty sure its the lower unit oil. I don't know what I should look for to try to repair to fix it. Thanks

Hi nolanb. If the oil coming out of the gearcase was white/milky then you definitely have water intrusion in which case you'll need to replace the oil seals. Not to worry, it's ado-it-yourself job and you get all the parts you need right here at iboats for about $25. Here are some great links that can walk you through the job. The models may be different, but all of the steps are essentially the same.

Are you positive it is coming from the water intake and not the exhaust outlet? Not to say that you don't have a gearcase leak also, but it is very unlikely. If it were leaking that badly, it would empty itself in no time. You probably are seeing unburnt fuel, emulsified with water. Those motors dump a lot of unburnt fuel overboard. That's the way they were made.

Re: 67 johnson gear oil coming out water intake after running

Kfa4303- thanks for the video links and I have a much better understanding of what the heck I'm doing now. I am positive that the lower unit oil is leaking into the gear case extension now because I have taken the
Impeller housing off (there was no gasket on the top side of the wear plate and I'm not sure if there should be) and the gasket underneath the wear plate was destroyed, and there was a pretty fair amount of gear case oil sitting in the recession under the gasket. So I believe I now have to remove the bushing that goes around the driveshaft and replace it and get a new gasket for the bottom and possibly the top of the wear plate. Can anyone show me where to find a lower unit seal kit for this motor because im having absolutely no luck. Thanks!
