I recently bought a 67 Merc 500 for my 15' LoneStar delray as an upgrade/temporary replacement for my 1966 33hp Johnson since I'm going to restore it cosmetically since the internals of the motor are in fantastic shape.
After i Rebuilt the Carbs, new Fuel Pump gaskets, and spark plugs i started it up and it fired right up. only issue was the gear shift was very stiff and it was stuck in gear. i assumed the cable was the issue so i disconnected it and it moved freely while disconnected from the motor. i pulled the lower unit since i had to replace the impeller/water pump. at this point i realized the motor was used in saltwater and not properly cleaned after its last use since i found a lot of corrosion.
the prop is seized to the prop shaft and wont budge. I've soaked it in PB-Blaster, Diesel, & acetone/ATF for a few weeks at a time. even heated up the shaft a bit with a propane torch. still wont budge. any ideas to get it off?
When i drained the oil from the lower unit, it was milkly colored so water was getting into it. so i gotta do a seal kit on it. and also see whats the issue on it not shifting. its all in the lower unit.
at this point would it be worth it to swap the lower unit to a newer case from the 70's so i can have a better selection of props? the splines for the drive shaft and shift are the same & the Shifting mechanism is very similar.
