The clutches on my faithful 67 40 hp rude are starting to slip under load. Is it the clutch spring that wears or the shaft that it grabs, I have read that you can switch the reverse clutch for the forward with like new results. Help!

Re: 67 rude electric clutches slip

It's been my experience that when the unit starts slipping that it is necessary to replace both the hub and spring. The forward and reverse hub can not be switched but the springs are the same. I have never heard that the electromatic clutch coils could be switched as their lead lengths are different.

Hub = 378519 - - - - - Spring = 311030

They are. PM me if you are interested in a NOS hub.

BTW, you ARE sure it isn't the prop slipping, right? And you ARE sure it isn't low voltage from the shift switch, right? Last but not least, you DO have Premium Blend oil in there, right? Many clutch problems aren't clutch problems at all.

It just started slipping this weekend and I haven't had time to check into it much. Yes, I have the right lube in the lower end, should check for water I guess. Will
