The 1977 6 Hp Evinrude I have runs definaly too rich. I run it in gear in a big 60 gallons drum and there's alot of gas at the surface of the water after a while stopped. It also smokes alot. Motor will bug at higher speed. I have re-checked carb and everthing is clean, the float is moving freely. The low speed is either to lean or it will shut off if I dont hold the throttle handle. Did a de-carb job and it helped a bit but not that much.

Compression when warm is 85 PSI on both cylinders. I did the electrical test with a spark tester and they both fires strong. And this tester reads low #'s compare to average.

What could be the problem? I'm starting to think it's a reed valve problem?

I can run with no problems my other 2 smalls outboards (7.5 and 4.5 HP) in gear in this drum at high rpms and water stays inside and they run well.

You can run a 7.5 WOT without throwing all the water out? Well, if you say so.

I say get that poor thing out of that drum and put it on a boat on the lake. THEN, if it is running poorly, maybe you need to fix it. Otherwise, it may not be broke. They all will smoke and cause an oil slick in a drum.

I got 2 props for my '83 7.5HP Johnson and I use the smaller one when running in the barrel. Maybe not wide open speed. Never run them at high rpm in neutral.

I sold this 6 HP to a guy that will fix it or keep it for parts, I have no more time to work on others O/B, I have my 40 horse Lark 8 to tune-up (carb rebuilt, new starter, new head gasket and new lower unit seals) and get the boat ready.
