Does anyone know where i can find a cross referrence guide for my 1968 18hp fastwin (M18802)?
I need a Foward gear for it and they cost over $500 new.
Love this engine but, just can't afford that much.
What years / hp are compatable as far as gearbox?
Thanks

Most of the 16, 20, qne 25's are compatable. the 20 and 25's lower unit is heavier (thicker) and will bolt right up. The problem is that you might wind up with gears that are as bad or worse. Any used you get must be inspected first.

They show up on eBay.

The big difference is that the 29 and 25's have a neutral detent and the 18 doesen't. Otherwise, they are identical.

Part number 377876 forward gear fits 18 and 20hp Evinrudes and Johnsons Late 1959 thru 1970. It is $89 at marineengine.com A far cry from the $500 somebody quoted you.

F_R is right. $500 is WAY too much. check ebay and/or aomci.com. you can often find them there as well. if you're old bearing is still good, keep it, but if you're unsure, I would replace it. make sure your pinion gear and clutch dog are good while you're at it too. that way you can take care of everything in the gear case all at once. here are some handy links too.

You're right Lieutenant; clicked on marineengine.com site you provided and brought up my engine (18802M), gearcase group, part# 33 from the IPB and this is what i got: #33 ? 378079 ? 378079 ? GEAR& BUSHING, FORWARD (1 required per assembly) 0378079 Part replaced by OMC0390970 0390970 GEAR&BRG KIT "INCL 326078,389470,389472" 0390970 $584.15. WAY too much. so i'm getting #377876 from ebay for $35.
Dont know if i can remove and replace old (good) bearing with simple hand tools. i think i read that it is pressed on. ? You guys have really helped alot. Bearing question is the final chapter for this project. Thanks again!

You mean the bearing on the forward gear? It simply slides on the shaft of the gear.

Hello,

I have the exact model(18802m) you have but I am trying to get part 383511(Crankcase cover) to fix my motor. We might consider to make a deal, i.e, you sell me the part I need or the other way around. I am in Dallas, TX. If interested, please provide your email address and I will contact you.

Thanks a lot!

Andrew, it's great to hear from another Fastwin enthusiast (hmm..new club maybe). what a great engine. love to show it off at the launch. there's always some noob there with a new electro wizbang motor having probs. i just pull her once and off i go. anyhow, sorry to hear about your Crankcase cover. dont have a spare but, if you have all the pieces it should be weldable. just make sure the welder knows what he's doing. That's just cheap pot metal but you gotta do it right. btw, i read about your starter. pitch it. i've started mine with a rope around the flywheel for years. these start so easy you dont need a starter. dont let it keep you down bro! get on the water.. seeya.
